I want to discuss rabies again, but I decided to call this newsletter monkeys. As a healthcare provider we cannot warn you enough about rabies and monkeys! Although you might think it is all rare in Jakarta, we find that you are at risk if you are not protecting yourself.

Depression is more than feeling unhappy or fed up for a few days. More than 300 million people suffer with depression according to the WHO. It is the leading cause for mental and physical disability. What would you do when you are feeling low in Jakarta?

Cold in the Tropics….

A cold is a mild viral infection of the nose, throat, sinuses and upper airways. It’s very common especially during the rainy season that seems to go on forever. It usually clears up on its own within a week or two.

The main symptoms of a cold include:

  • a blocked or runny nose
  • sneezing
  • a cough

Sex happens. Diseases are around and we feel it is important that you have some knowledge to help you or others. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are passed from one person to another through unprotected sex or genital contact.

You can be tested for STIs at several clinics in Jakarta. It can be expensive to have all the tests (3 million rupiah or more) and prevention is obviously a cheaper and a more healthy solution.

Many deaths could be prevented if first aid is given before emergency services arrive or before they are reached. There is a growing  need for effective preventive interventions against dengue, a disease caused by four viruses, spread by mosquitos. One dengue vaccine has been licensed, Dengvaxia® , developed by Sanofi Pasteur.

Dysentery

Introduction 

Dysentery is an infection of the intestines that causes diarrhoea containing blood or mucus.

Other symptoms of dysentery can include:

  • Painful stomach cramps
  • Nausea or vomitting
  • a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or above, or 37.5C (99.5F) or above in children under five
